My sister Kadee was born a star.
She even had a pink t-shirt as a baby that stated A Star is Born, there was no denying it.
For the past four plus years she has been working towards becoming a doctor. Four plus because she already has a degree in anthropology, so it wasn’t the straightest, easiest path to where she is now.
The next step is residency. Kadee has survived and thrived in her rotations, exam taking, interviews, long nights and crazy travel that came along with it.
The answer to where she will land for the next few years is tucked inside an envelope with her name on it. I imagine it as I type this in a pile with her friend’s envelopes on the Dean’s desk.
When she opens that envelope she will be surrounded by family and friends…the anticipation will be quite something in that room with all those prospective doctors finding out at the very same moment.
Our family wanted to make her something unique and extra special because she is unique and extra special.
We each wrote five memories (Mom got to write six) from the past four years. Each of those 26 sentiments is tucked inside a tassel on the necklace we will give her for The Match, the day she’ll be matched or officially appointed her position in her graduate medical education. (She’s not allowed to look at the blog until after, so the tassels are a surprise).
I teared up writing mine. I cried typing all of them. It is truly bittersweet. How is it possible to be so happy and sad at the same time? Oh how I will miss her (we are all in agreement that she will most likely match on the East Coast) and oh how I am bursting with excitement and happiness for what she has accomplished and what is yet to come!
Steps on how I made the Celebration Necklace are here.
